ILC Diliman Holds Basics of Teaching with UVLe 3

ILC Diliman conducted a seminar/workshop Training on Basics of Teaching with UVLê 3 for the UP faculty members last February 05, 2018 at the ILC Laboratory Room No.103.

In the training, Mr. Michael Van Supranes highlighted the features of the Basic Teacher role, as well as the advantages of UVLê 3 over social media platforms as Edtech like Facebook. For example,  in the assignment setting submission feature, Basic Teachers can set up assignment submission dates such as the start, due and cut-off dates.

The training ran from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, led by PDA Michael Van Supranes, with the assistance Dir. Joseph Ryan Lansangan, programmers Tristan Jake Alcantara and John Mark Roco, and creative arts specialist Melody Briola as the photographer.

UVLê 101: A Quick Introduction

University Virtual Learning Environment (UVLê) is a learning management system (LMS) developed and offered in UP Diliman. UVLê is also being used in other CUs (e.g. UP Manila, also UP Cebu, UP Baguio). UVLê and other information, management, and collaborative systems/services are managed by the Interactive Learning Center (ILC) Diliman.

ILC Diliman launched an updated version of UVLê this 2nd semester A.Y. 2017-2018, this is the second major upgrade of the university’s LMS.  Note that UVLê is essentially a Moodle site. It has been running on a customized code of Moodle. Moodle is an open source learning management system. The new UVLê runs in Moodle 3.1 platform.

UVLê allows teachers to create online spaces for their classes. With strategic implementation, UVLê can be effective in supporting learning. Although mainly online, it supports a wide range of learning strategies such as enhanced active learning, adaptive learning, mobile learning, blended learning, and gamification, to name a few.

UVLê has a comprehensive set of LMS tools.

Besides class applications, it may be used for supplementary learning activities (e.g. online consultation/review site), formal communications (e.g. communication platform for members of a department), training programs (short courses offered by academic units), and other implementations.

It is the same as your Dilnet account (i.e. official/permanent CRS account). UVLê can be used by anyone who is eligible to have a Dilnet account (e.g. UP Diliman students, teaching staff, administrative staff). If you have problems with your Dilnet account, please contact or go to the UP Computer Center. After your first login, you must agree to the university’s Acceptable Use Policy or AUP (general guidelines on use of university resources) to fully access UVLê.

Send a request for an account. Members of other UP units can be granted access to UVLê through a request addressed to the director of ILC Diliman, provided that the intention of use is in-line with ILC Diliman’s mandate. The request may be done as a unit. After account creation, users must agree to the university’s AUP on their first login.

Method 1: Via CRS

In the faculty module, visit the Instructor Dashboard. To create a page for a class, click the corresponding request link in the Action column. The course page will be created and students will be enrolled automatically the next day (i.e. every 3:00 AM).  Teachers and students will be notified in their e-mails upon processing. Note that this method is limited to teachers in UP Diliman (CRS users) and can only be used to create 1 course page for each class. If you wish to create a single course page for several sections of the same subject, Method 2 will be a better option.

Method 2: Via ILC Helpdesk

If you have special arrangements (e.g. one course page for 5 sections), then it will be better to open a course via ILC Diliman Helpdesk. Open a ticket under “UVLê - Open Course” and input details of your request (e.g. name of course). The request will be processed within 24 hours during work days. An enrollment key will be given to the teacher upon creation of the course. Students shall enroll themselves by entering an enrollment key.

The upload limit is 50 MB per file. If an activity requires larger files, send a request for a higher upload limit via ILC Helpdesk.

If the teacher requested the course via CRS, students are automatically enrolled to the course. The system fails to automatically enrol students who have never accessed UVLê at least once. Students will receive an e-mail, if the system fails to enroll them. The problem is usually resolved few hours after your first log in.

If the teacher requested the course via ILC Helpdesk, students must self-enroll to the course. The teacher will provide an enrolment key. To self-enroll, search for the course within UVLê, click the course link, and enter the enrollment key.

If you are enrolled in the course, you will see it in My Courses. Otherwise, click quick links then choose view all courses. Find the course using the search bar.

You may contact ILC Diliman via:

ILC Diliman manages and updates UVLê, and also provides trainings on using UVLê.

Users can expect a more inspired look and better user-experience in UVLê 3. Most procedures remained the same but there are several useful design and function improvements in UVLê 3. In no particular order, ILC Diliman presents 10 best improvements in UVLê 3 and other notable changes.

1. Course creation via CRS

Teachers with Dilnet accounts may now open a course via CRS. Click the course request link in the instructor dashboard to open a page for a class. Requests are automatically processed every 3:00 AM. Teachers will receive an e-mail about the status of their request, and students will be enrolled to the course and will be notified about the newly created course.

2. Basic Teacher role for starters

By default, teachers will be assigned to a “basic teacher” role. A basic teacher has access to commonly used tools only. It is designed for teachers who are new to UVLê or who need basic tools only. Basic teachers can create forum, poll, and assignment. The role also allows sharing of files (including images, videos etc.), and websites. If a user wants to use advanced features (e.g. online quiz), the user can switch to a “teacher” role anytime. The switch role option is found under the change setting menu.

3. Mobile friendly site

The new UVLê site is mobile responsive. With stable internet connection, It can be comfortably viewed in a mobile browser in tablets or smart phones. UVLê 3 doesn’t have its own mobile application yet, but you may access UVLê 3 using the official Moodle Mobile application.

4. Pop-up guides

For certain pages, a guided tour will pop-up on your first visit. Pop-up guides may be revisited by clicking your name then “Guide Me On This Page”. This shall help users easily understand UVLê 3.

5. Upload/download several files at the same time

If an activity requires several references or materials, teachers may upload several files in a zip folder. When uploading a zip file, opt to save it as a “folder” resource. In UVLê 3, students can download the whole folder as a zip file. This feature is not available in the previous version.

6. Assess assignments online

The submitted document is automatically converted to PDF, and teachers may use the PDF annotation tool for feedback and grading. Students will see the annotated version.

7. File box for adding attachments in assignments

Teachers can now easily attach files in assignment activities. Attaching files in assignments is easier in UVLê 3.

8. New roles for team teaching

There are new roles that may help in team teaching situations and/or teaching assistantship (e.g. content managers, facilitators etc.). For example, the content manager can help the teacher manage resources (files, videos etc.) within a course page. The content manager could be a staff, teaching assistant, or another teacher. Contact ILC Diliman for more information.

9. Recycle bin for deleted activities/resources

Teachers may restore deleted activities/resources in the recycle bin. The recycle bin will be seen under change settings > course administration, if there are deleted activities/resources.

10. Easier way of editing section titles

In edit mode, section titles can be easily edited. Click the edit icon , type the new title, and press enter.

Other notable changes:

The “Change Setting” Menu. In UVLê 3.0, “course administration”, “switch role to…”, and other administration menus are located in the “Change Settings” menu at the upper right corner of the page.

Searching Courses. To search courses, click Quick Links > View All Courses.

Plagiarism Checker. CROT plagiarism checker is no longer supported in MOODLE. In UVLê 3, the CROT option can only compare files within the site. As a supplement, the assignment activity is linked to a free third party online plagiarism checker.

  • Teachers may input topic tags (similar to hashtags) in each activity or resource.
  • Important forum posts can now be pinned to the top of your list, making them more visible to your students.
  • When setting up a workshop, the teacher can now specify the type of file for submission.
  • New mechanics in using/editing the gradebook.

And other minor changes.
